Even more direct steering characteristics in your 928
The Porsche 928 is a great driving car with good steering characteristics. Unfortunately, after 30 years this can be quite different. It can then happen that your steering rack bushings are worn out. You can replace them with original ones from Porsche, but your steering characteristics can get even better! What these bushings are and how to improve them we are going to tell you in this article.
The steering rack of the 928 hangs under the engine subframe. The steering rack is attached with rubber bushings that have bolts through them. With age, the rubber bushings dry out and can crack. It is also common for a 928 to suffer or have suffered from oil leakage from, for example, the crankcase. This causes oil to get on the rubbers, which then become corroded and lose their strength.
Detecting worn rubbers is difficult to see unless you have access to a bridge. It is, however, noticeable in the car's steering. When you turn in for a corner, the front wheels should actually immediately
react immediately. If this does not happen immediately, but after, say, 10° of steering deflection, the steering rack bushings may be worn. If this is much more, then it could be that your hardx clutch is worn out. This is often not quickly noticeable because it wears out slowly. Sometimes you don't realize it for several years until you find out that a friend's car does steer very tightly.
The solution to all these problems is fairly simple by using aluminum steering box bushings. These aluminum bushings replace the rubber bushings. With a close tolerance, these bushings are made to fit perfectly in the steering rack. Because the bushings are made of solid aluminum, no more play occurs and you get a more direct steering feel. You also feel better what happens at the wheels, because this is no longer damped by the rubbers in the steering box. In addition, the bushings last a lifetime because of the use of aluminum.
The installation of the bushings is relatively simple to perform provided you have a bridge or a well. Because the steering rack only needs to be lowered, no alignment is required, because the track rods remain mounted. Of course, we can also do these for you. Go to www.garagedeloods.nl
