Easiest Crank Sensor for 944
THE best way to mount a crankshaft position sensor.
New aluminium pulley sets timing at exactly 90°
When boosting a 944 Turbo, for example, it is wise to use a new programmable ECU, such as Megasquirt, VEMS, KMS, MSD, MaxxECU, or one of the many others.
The main signal for these programmable ECUs is the BDP (or VR) sensor (crankshaft position sensor).
Because the Porsche 944 is originally equipped with a dual BDP (VR) sensor, this is a tricky setup to get working for many systems. Often, a so-called Audi trigger method is used with the camshaft sensor as input. However, this does have drawbacks.
Much simpler is this kit. With this ready-made kit, you can quickly and precisely mount the sensor on your engine block.
Features:
- Cheapest and best solution on the market
- High quality components
- Assembly within 2 hours
- Aluminium pulley with trigger at exactly 90°
- Very solid and secure mounting of the sensor
- Trigger wheel sits completely behind the distribution cover, protecting it from dirt
- Suitable for cars with and without air conditioning
- Suitable for the 924S, 944, 944T
- Each support is manually checked for correct position
Montage
- Set crankshaft to BDP, TDC. Check for camshaft wheel and flywheel mark (underside)
- Loosen crankshaft bolt, for this use the crankshaft blocking tool which is placed at the location of the starter motor.
- Remove the alternator pulley by unscrewing the 4 bolts. Leave the balancer shaft wheel in place.
Now weld the triggerwheel to the correct position yourself or replace it with the new aluminium pulley
- Mount the pulley and position the missing tooth at about 90 degrees after the sensor.
- Mount the sensor bracket on the crankcase
- The distribution cap (on later models) may need to be modified by sawing off the empty piece of plastic, see photo
- From the front distribution cap, 1 cm of plastic can be removed as a hole for the sensor after marking it off.
- Adjust the sensor to 0.8mm to triggerwheel with the plug facing up and secure with the bolts.
- Refit everything
Self-welding triggerwheel
For mounting this, it has to be fixed with 4 small welds, at the back of the existing alternator pulley.
