924 - 944 Electric Power Steering

Driving a 944 is even more enjoyable with this set; just turn the ignition on and it works immediately. Finally, the chance to install a smaller sports steering wheel. The strength of the power assist is speed-dependent or can be manually adjusted as desired. The system is completely maintenance-free, unlike the system in later models.

The 924 and 944 up to 1985 did not come from the factory with power steering. This is a disadvantage compared to the 944 after 1985 series 2, which is why many people prefer the later model. By installing this lightweight electric power steering, that disadvantage has suddenly become an advantage.

Installation

Installation is not easy to call, but anyone reasonably handy can do it themselves; you don’t need a car lift, just a flexible back. Remove the front seat for easier installation. If you keep the old parts, it can be reverted back.

Installing a conventional power steering system is a lot of work and gathering the parts is a small challenge. Especially the bracket for the steering pump is almost impossible to find, and to install it, the timing belt must be removed. See also one of the photos of the conventional set.
