Porsche 924S 944 968 928 24 mm piston pin – standard & lightweight
New 24 mm piston pin for various Porsche 924S, 944, 968 and 928 engines. Available in a standard version and a lightweight version.
The piston pins are made of 16MnCr5 steel and are ground and hardened. The lightweight version reduces the reciprocating mass in the engine. This makes it particularly interesting for an engine rebuild or performance engine build.

The required length varies by engine and piston. Therefore, always measure the original piston pin during an engine rebuild before ordering a new piston pin. On V8 engines, the crankshaft must always be rebalanced when using a lighter piston pin, connecting rod or piston.

The 24 mm lightweight piston pin has been technically calculated for use in, among others, the Porsche 944 Turbo.
Based on this calculation, the piston pin is suitable for applications up to:

The calculation takes into account both the mass forces at high engine speeds and the load caused by cylinder pressure and fatigue.
For prolonged heavy track or endurance use, we recommend an additional safety margin. At a lower maximum engine torque, more fatigue reserve is available.
The stated values are based on a technical strength and fatigue calculation. They are not a substitute for a material certificate or destructive practical testing.
Lightweight piston pin with H-beam connecting rods
The lightweight piston pin is particularly interesting in combination with our lightweight H-beam connecting rods.
In a Porsche 944 four-cylinder engine, combining four H-beam connecting rods and four lightweight piston pins can provide a total weight saving of approximately 944 grams compared with the original combination we measured.
When H-beam connecting rods and lightweight piston pins are used in a Porsche 928, the total weight saving across eight cylinders can be approximately 1888 grams.
When making such a modification to a Porsche 928, the correct crankshaft balancing and bobweights must be taken into account during engine assembly.
When should you replace a piston pin?
Always inspect the piston pins during an engine rebuild.
Replacement may be necessary in the event of:

visible wear

grooves or damage on the running surface

excessive clearance between the piston pin and connecting rod bushing

excessive clearance in the piston

replacement of the connecting rods
-
reconditioning of the connecting rods

reuse of original pistons during an engine rebuild
Do not inspect only the piston pin. Also check the bore in the piston and the piston pin bushing in the connecting rod.
Installation information
The piston pin connects the piston to the small end of the connecting rod.
Before installation, measure at least:

length of the existing piston pin

fit in the piston

fit in the connecting rod bushing
Do not use only the Porsche model or engine type to determine the correct length. Always check the parts actually installed in the engine.
For a complete performance engine build, the piston, piston pin, connecting rod and crankshaft balancing must be assessed as one combination.
Wössner pistons
If you are using new Wössner pistons, first check the piston pins supplied with the pistons.
If the supplied piston pins are suitable for the intended application, replacement with our lightweight piston pin is not necessary.
If you want to reduce the reciprocating mass further, first compare the dimensions and weight of the supplied piston pin with our lightweight version.

The various Porsche 944 engines use a piston pin with a diameter of approximately 24 mm, but the required length may vary. Therefore, always measure the original piston pin before ordering.
What is the difference between the standard and lightweight piston pins?
The standard version with a length of 66,85 mm weighs approximately 146 grams.
The lightweight version of the same length weighs approximately 120 grams. That is approximately 18% lighter.
The shorter lightweight version, measuring 64,85 mm, weighs approximately 117 grams.
Why use a lightweight piston pin?
A lighter piston pin reduces the reciprocating mass in the engine.
This is particularly interesting for a performance engine build or when lighter H-beam connecting rods are also used.
Is the lightweight piston pin suitable for a tuned Porsche 944 Turbo?
Yes. The 24 mm lightweight piston pin has been technically calculated for applications up to 7000 rpm and 450 Nm.

Does a lightweight piston pin increase power?
The piston pin itself does not directly increase engine power.
The advantage lies in the lower mass of the moving engine components.
