If you hear a screeching sound coming from under your 924/944/968/928, the torque tube bearings may be worn out.
This sound is there both at idle and while driving. The noise will not diminish over time, eventually the bearing may fall apart completely. Greasing or lubrication is unfortunately not possible, you just can't get to it.
A torque tube has 3 or 4 bearings that are worn out after the many miles in 40 years.
After replacing these bearings, the axle is quiet again and you can enjoy your Porsche more again.
Our preference and also that of many customers is to overhaul your own torque tube instead of working with an exchange system. This takes us approx one day turnaround time.
Rebuild torque tube
The removal of the torque tube requires the removal of the exhaust, gearbox, clutch and the entire rear axle. Removal and installation usually takes 10 to 14 hours. This depends on how tight everything is. With a lot of rust, it becomes difficult to loosen the bolts. Of course, we can also do this for you.
Revolutionary solution 924/944/968
Well I have good news for you, the rear axle can stay put. The transaxle tube can just stay under your car.
We have developed a method and tool that allows us to replace the transaxle bearings without removing the transaxle from under the car.
An additional advantage is that the car does not need to be extra aligned, because nothing is changed to the suspension.
It is still a lot of work, but it is much easier and the risk of failure is virtually zero. Having to disassemble a rear axle has the risk of failure.
We now have so much experience with this repair that we can even make a fixed price for it, an insanely low price compared to the conventional method.
So not 2700 euros, but only 1750 euros incl VAT. This price applies to the 944, 944S, 944S2, 924S, 924.

Rebuild torque tube
The overhaul requires special tools and knowledge to properly disassemble and assemble the shaft. For this we have made a special arrangement with a press. Some people think it can be done with a hammer.
In addition, we have used torque tubes in stock if your torque tube is no longer rebuildable. This can happen if there is damage to the shaft.

How do I recognize worn torque tube bearings?
- Whooping noise coming from center tunnel while driving/stationary
- Put the gearshift in neutral. Depress the clutch pedal. The shaft will then slowly rotate out. The noise will then decrease until the axle is stationary and the noise is gone. If this is a distinct whirring noise then the torque tube bearings are worn out.

What is a torque tube?
The Porsche 924, 944, 928 and 968 feature a torque tube. This is a shaft that connects the engine to the gearbox. (See picture) In this ''tube'' there are bearings (no. 11 drawing) that eventually wear out. This will cause a screeching sound which can be experienced as irritating.
Can I disassemble and assemble my torque tube myself?
Yes, this is certainly possible, but it is a big job, even for an experienced wrencher. It is also necessary to have the right tools and a lifting bridge.
